Earlier today, a mere 12 hours after the Maple Leafs got dragged around PPG Paints Arena by the Penguins like a dog that shit on your new carpet, Kyle Dubas decided to address the teams god awful performance by trading for Florida Panthers forward Dennis Malgin. Soon to be restricted free agent Malgin is a career bottom 6 forward with good footspeed, small size, pretty average defensive sensibility and is fucking trash on faceoffs.
In return for Malgin, the Panthers received Mason Marchment, a 6’4 200lb left winger, who is also on an expiring RFA contract. Marchment is still an unproven prospect, but after watching how the Leafs have played, why not give him a chance? Apparently Marchment caught Maple Leafs’ second coming of Christ Mitch Marner with an elbow to the face in juniors, and got a lengthy suspension for it. If there is any answer to why this trade went down, and THAT isn’t the answer, then this was the most needless trade in a good while.
